How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul

Designers are quick to tell us about their sources of inspiration, but they are much less willing to reveal such critical matters as how to find work, how much they charge, and what to do when a client rejects three weeks of work and refuses to pay the bill. How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul addresses the concerns of young designers who want to earn a living by doing expressive and meaningful work, and who want to avoid becoming hired drones working on soulless projects. Written by a designer for designers, it combines practical advice with philosophical guidance to help young professionals embark on their careers.
The book also includes inspiring interviews with ten leading designers, including Rudy VanderLans (Emigre), John Warwicker (Tomato), Neville Brody (Research Studios), and Andy Cruz (House Industries). All told, How to be a graphic designer covers just about every aspect of the profession, and stands as an indispensable guide for any young designer.

...

Fresh Dialogue 22: Making Magazines

This year's Fresh Dialogue presents three young publishing gurus who are reinventing how magazines are made. They've thrown off the templates and formulas of traditional publishing in favor of new and innovative approaches to magazine making. Find out what inspired them to take matters into their own hands. Representing the next generation of publishing kingpins, we have: Tod Lippy, creator of the luscious biannual arts publication Esopus; Lisa Farjam, the force behind Middle-East culture magazine Bidoun; and master storyteller David Haskell, editor-in-chief of Topic magazine. And to moderate this evening of lively discussion will be magazine industry mover, shaker and supreme tastemaker, James Truman. AIGA/NY

Library of Styles - Digital, Gmund Paper

Gmund Colors offers a line unprecedented in its wide variety of hues. This precision and variance is celebrated in a feigned annual report for a bio-data company, where vivid informatic imagery and calculative charts and diagrams are played against the rich tones of the paper. Design: Tolleson

Könyvajánló, Emil Ruder: Typography

This book is the bequest of a great typographer for the cultural heritage of our day. In the post-war years, when in nearly every field of applied art there were still no signs whatsoever of a shift to a new, more contemporary form of expression, Emil Ruder was one of the first pioneers to abandon the conventional rules of traditional typography and create new laws that satisfied the requirements of a new typography.

Buy Nothing Day - Autumn 06

Buy nothing day is an idea instigated by Adbusters as a protest against consumerism. The event has grow in popularity and now takes place in over 20 countries. This year buy nothing day is on the 25th November.
As part of a univeristy brief I designed an identity for the day and a series of posters. I chose the card as a central idea because the increasing consumer debt in this country is directly related to over-use of plastic cards. James Chambers, UK

WERK 11: Bastardized

"In our high tech world anything is possible. We can create everytyhing if we set our mind to it. New technology allows us to be in touch with the whole world and makes it possible to access the enourmous information ocean. We are hybrid creatures. Bastardized by these technologies. It is not something that is good or bad. It is just a reality that we have to live with and find our way with"
